Oral Cancer Screenings
At Perry Family Dentistry, we don’t always discuss oral cancer screenings at every appointment, but we always check for it at every visit. We believe early detection is the best defense, and we use intraoral photography to track and recommend care if needed.

What Is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer occurs when malignant cells grow in the mouth. Oral cancer, however, does not improve over time, unlike other sores or growths. Untreated, the disease can spread to other parts of the body.
Oral cancer has a five-year survival rate of about 84%. For patients, this is a promising development compared to most cancers. At Dr. Perry’s dental practice, we are the first step in oral cancer treatment.
Am I At Risk Of Oral Cancer?
It can take years for oral cancer to develop in many patients. The most common age group for oral cancer is 40 and older, but it can affect anyone. Unless caught early, it may be life-threatening or cause permanent damage to your mouth.
- The following factors can also cause oral cancer:
- Tobacco and Alcohol Use
- Unhealthy Diet
- Genetics
How Are Oral Cancer Screenings Performed?
During your oral cancer screenings, your dentist at Perry Family Dentistry will look for red or white patches or sores inside the mouth. You will also be examined for lumps or other abnormalities in your mouth. Our dentists may also use an oral cancer screening light and an oral exam to screen for oral cancer. In an exam, a light will be shined into your mouth, making healthy tissue appear dark and abnormal tissue appear white. Our dentists will recommend you to an oral surgeon or oncologist for diagnosis and treatment advice if a concern is identified.
